In a city where gastronomy changes at the drop of a chopstick, Okku has re-emerged from Dubai’s gourmet history books to ignite the age-old debate: what’s the best Japanese restaurant in Dubai (a question that is oft discussed between divided foodies, knives in hand).

Okku said goodbye to diners in 2018, leaving a sushi-shaped hole in the city’s heart. Fast forward to now, and Okku has returned with the promise of the past and an eye on the future.

But, does this phoenix rise to the occasion? Or is it merely a nostalgic shadow of its former self?

In a dramatic twist, Okku has forsaken its old stomping grounds at the H Hotel on SZR.

Instead, its upgraded to the plush new Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah. It’s marked with a five meter tall logo stamped on the hotel’s exterior; it’s less of a sign and more of a statement.

Entrance is through a mirrored hallway graced by terracotta warriors (a definite nod to those who dine for the ‘gram). Inside, the space is expansive with a 360-degree bar in the center that might as well declare dominion over the dining room. The design ethos? Modern, punctuated with yet more terracotta warriors set under exposed brickwork.

Space is a key word here; if it’s a full house you won’t feel it. But alternatively, a quiet evening will leave you gazing at a very large area, sans diners (but we don’t predict many quiet nights over the weekend).

It’s evident from the food that Okku hasn’t lost its touch. While new dishes grace the menu, many age-old classics return to remind you why this restaurant was always in a league of its own.

The signature flaming avocado is an immediate and explosive reminder of what we’ve missed. The baked and glazed aubergine is just as good as it was years ago, with new dishes such as the Toromi chicken sitting pretty on mini hibachi grills.

Yes, the food comes at a hefty price, but it’s a premium ticket to flavour town that’s worth every dirham.

Eating at the new Okku feels a bit like a reunion. You reminisce over old dishes, but stand ready to make new (tasty) memories. Okku is back, and dare we say it, better than ever.
